What does the company need to do?

The company may initiate the programme at the beginning of the month following that in which the Swedish Energy Agency has received its written application.

The programme for improving energy efficiency lasts for five years.

During the first two years, the company will:

  • introduce and obtain certification for a standardized energy management system. A Swedish standard for energy management was established in 2003. This is now replaced by an European standard for energy management, EN 16001.
  • carry out a energy review, in greater depth than the one described in the energy management standard. The purpose of the energy review is to enable the company to see its energy consumption and identify measures to improve the efficiency of its electricity consumption. The company will prepare a list of the measures to be implemented in subsequent years. These must have a pay-back time of less than three years. The list is to be submitted to the Swedish Energy Agency,
  • introduce procedures for purchasing high-consumption electrical equipment. When new equipment is being bought, the company will give greater preference to energy-efficient products.
  • introduce procedures for project planning and renovation. At the earliest possible stage, the company will analyse and evaluate the impact of different solutions on the company’s energy use.

Over the subsequent three years, the company will:

  • implement the measures in the list submitted to the Swedish Energy Agency,
  • continue to apply the energy management system, as well as the procedures for purchasing and project planning,
  • demonstrate the effect the purchasing procedures on the company and
  • assess the effects of the project planning procedures.

Programme life cycle

The PFE programme can be summarized as in the illustration below. The idea is that the programme shall establish a structure for ongoing energy management within each participating company.
