Cooking and food storage
Set both the fridge and the freezer to the right temperature. The temperature recommended for the fridge is +5 degrees C and for the freezer, -18 degrees C. Every degree reduction in temperature increases the energy consumption by around 5 percent.
Defrost the freezer when frost has built up in it. It is also advisable to wipe the rear of the fridge and freezer.
Do you intend to defrost food from the freezer? Take it out of the freezer in good time and let it defrost in the fridge.
Make sure that the doors or covers of the fridge and freezer are tight. Change the rubber seals if they are damaged.
Do you intend to buy a new fridge or freezer? Choose one that has an energy rating of A or A+ and A++.
Use saucepans and frying pans with flat bottom of a size corresponding to the size of the plate.
When cooking or boiling water, put a lid on the saucepan.
Use an electric kettle when boiling water. This saves energy.
Do you want to warm up a small portion of food or only a cup of water for tea or coffee? The microwave oven is a good alternative.
Try to buy locally produced food, such as Swedish meat. But it may sometimes be better to buy tomatoes, for instance, that have been grown in a warmer country than in a greenhouse in Sweden.
