Vasasensor

The company has a wireless system that monitors the pressure profile over the paper webs of paper-making machines at full operation and feeds back the information for controllong the paper machines for optimal production.

The team behind Vasasensor, like the concept, originated from research at the Institute for Micro and Nanotechnology in Gothenburg, Imego, and Chalmers University of Technology. The company began its journey in connection with training at the Chalmers School of Entrepreneurship, CSE.

Swedish paper mills are responsible for a large part of Sweden's total energy consumption. The business concept is to offer a unique measurement system consisting of integrated wireless sensor units that give paper manufacturers previously unknown information on the pressure distribution in the press section.

By being able to monitor the pressure profile between the rollers of the paper machines during operation, paper manufacturers can dewater papermaking pulp more efficiently. It is significantly less energy-demeaning to press the water out of the paper web than to heat it away in the next step of the process, the drying section. Other benefits in addition to lower energy consumption are increased production, more uniform quality, increased machine operation and less waste.

"The paper-making industry is one of Sweden's most energy-intensive industries and is responsible for approx. 15 % of the country's total consumption of electrical power. For example, 1 % more efficient dewatering in the press section with the use of PressEyes provides energy savings in the drying section of 4 %, which means that the market for the system is quite large"
