Sustainability criteria for biofuels and bioliquids

A given set of sustainability criteria that cover the entire production chain of a biofuel or bioliquid, from feedstock production to end use, shall be fulfilled for it to be considered sustainable in Sweden.

Act (2010:598) concerning sustainability criteria for biofuels and bioliquids ensures that those biofuels and bioliquids that are used in Sweden fulfil these criteria, it came into force on 1 October 2010. Government Bill 2010/11:152 proposed several amendments to the act, which were subsequently accepted by the Swedish Parliament in September 2011. The new act entered into force on 1 November 2011.

The Swedish legislative framework concerning biofuels and bioliquids is based on the European Directive 2009/28/EC on the promotion of the use of energy from renewable sources, also known as the RED, and is aimed at suppliers and users of biofuels and bioliquids.

On these pages you will find information related to the on-going work concerning sustainability criteria for biofuels and bioliquids in Sweden. On the right side of this page you can find a general presentation on the Swedish system as well as a list of those economic operators that have been approved by said system and have attained approved sustainability decisions.
