Supervision of CDM and JI
The CDM Executive Board
In order to facilitate a prompt start to the CDM it was decided in Marrakech in 2001 to appoint a special supervisory body for CDM within the UN. The CDM Executive Board includes elected members from various parties to the Climate Convention. The CDM Executive Board’s mandate is to develop rules and recommendations for CDM projects and to approve, register and oversee CDM projects. The Board issues Certified Emission Reductions (CERs) after approved verification by an accredited independent body. The CDM Executive Board is also responsible for the accreditation of such independent bodies – “Designated Operational Entities” (DOEs) which verify that CDM projects comply with the rules for CDM. The CDM Executive Board has the right to test the verification of DOE’s.
The JI Supervisory Committee
The JI Supervisory Committee regulates the supervision and reporting of JI projects. The JI Supervisory Committee has a less central role than the CDM Executive Board even if the project cycle closely resembles that of CDM projects.
