The SET Plan was launched by the Commission in 2007. Its aim is to create a long term EU framework for energy technology development. It will accelerate the availability and development of new energy technologies.
The SET-Plan brings together the coordination of the European Commission, the research capacities of the major European institutes and universities, the engagement of European industry and the commitment of the Member States. The actions will be based on reliable information about the technology and capacity.
Financing the SET Plan
The introduction and use of new energy smart technology will be necessary if EU is going to reach its goal to reduce the emssions by 20 percent. The Commission proposed in a communication in october 2009 that another 50 billion Euro shall be invested in new energy techonlogy during the next ten years. This means that the current R&DD budget will be tripled.
About the conference
The conference’s objective was to further the Strategic Energy Technology (SET-) plan strategies and activities and, of course, to be an important networking event. Another essential topic was the financing of the SET-plan, which was discussed in a moderated panel.
The SET Plan Conference 2009 in Stockholm attracted nearly 400 participants from all the member states. They represented different stakeholders; academies, companies, governments and NGO's.
The conference was inaugurated by the Swedish minister of Energy, Ms Maud Olofsson, together with the Commisioner for Energy, Mr Andris Piebalgs, and the Commissioner of Research, Mr Janez Potocnik.
The conference was arranged in connection with the Swedish EU Presidency by the Swedish Energy Agency in collaboration with the European Commission.
Conclusions and summary
The important technologies and industrial initiatives that the SET-Plan promotes was discussed in eight parallel sessions on eight of industrial initiatives that the SET Plan promotes. These were bioenergy, carbon capture and storage (CCS), concentrated solar power (CSP), energy efficiency, nuclear energy, photovoltaics, smart grids and wind power. The work in each session was ambitious and was reported by a rapporteur from each session durind the second day.
The results and conclusions from these sessions were presented by rapporteurs from each session. Download the pdf:s to the right. A summmary of the confrence will be published here soon.
The SET-plan Conference was supported by The European Commission.
