The Swedish Energy Agency awards SEK 100 million in support for biogas
Eleven projects have been grated investment support of a total of SEK 100 million that will promote the development of technology within the biogas sector.
The Swedish Energy Agency has distributed a good SEK 100 million for purposes of supporting the efficient and increased production, distribution and use of biogas and other renewable gases. The purpose is to promote energy technology that is favourable from a climate perspective, but is not yet commercially competitive.
"Biogas is an exceptionally good fuel which has a number of advantages, however it is expensive to produce. The list of projects that we have now arrived at includes most of the parts of the biogas production chain. Among other things, the project involves a full-scale demonstration of biogas in liquid form, which makes for an increased possibility for heavy transports to use biogas," says Kalle Svensson of the Swedish Energy Agency.
During 2009, the government allocated SEK 150 million and tasked the Swedish Energy Agency with distributing these funds.
"The projects have been chosen based upon, among other things, GHG benefits, technical potential and demonstration value as well as energy and resource efficiency," says Anders Lewald of the Swedish Energy Agency.
The first call was carried out during the autumn of 2009 and encompassed approx. SEK 100 million. Each project will receive at the most SEK 25 million and the funds will comprise at most 45 percent of the additional costs of the project. The call generated great interest which led to 76 applications, with a total sum amounted to SEK 778 million.
Other biogas support for research
In addition to the SEK 150 million, the Swedish Energy Agency supports different projects for research within biogas. One research area is to make the process for producing biogas more efficient. This year, approx. SEK 6 million will be distributed for this. Tema Vatten in Linköping has been awarded approx. SEK 7 million over four years in order to conduct research in this area.
