How the Energy System Works
The energy system is more than just electricity from a socket. It consists of three main parts that together show how energy moves through society – from source to end use.
What is an energy system?
An energy system includes various energy sources such as fossil fuels, biofuels, nuclear power, hydropower, wind power and solar energy.
It also encompasses energy carriers like electricity and district heating, as well as how and where energy is used.
Energy use is typically divided into three sectors: industry, transport, and residential and service.
Energy systems can be structured in different ways, but they are all governed by various frameworks – for example, technical and economic ones. They are also regulated by laws and policies that ensure the system is reliable, safe and sustainable.
From source to use
Here, we explain how the energy system is structured, why it must always be in balance, and how energy flows through the system – from source to end use.
