Battery delegation to Japan focused on knowledge sharing and enhanced collaboration

The Swedish Energy Agency is co-hosting a Nordic delegation to Japan with a focus on batteries. The aim is to deepen cooperation in research and innovation, market Sweden as a test bed and attract investments to strengthen Sweden's competitiveness.

The delegation includes Swedish researchers and companies working with battery solutions. During the visit, the delegation will meet with Japanese battery manufacturers, research institutes and innovation environments, and participate in the Battery Japan trade fair in Tokyo.

On 18 September, a battery seminar will be held in the Nordic Pavilion at World Expo 2025 in Osaka, where Nordic and Japanese stakeholders will meet to discuss common challenges and opportunities.

The purpose of the trip is to create conditions for long-term collaboration, joint projects and knowledge exchange. The delegation is a concrete step towards connecting Swedish actors with international partners and positioning Sweden as an attractive partner in the European and global battery value chain.

– Sweden has a lot to offer in battery tech, from world-class research and testing environments to cutting-edge companies and markets. Through strengthened cooperation with Japan, we can create joint solutions that contribute to both countries' resilience and energy transition, while also contributing to a stronger European battery value chain, says Greger Ledung, Battery Research Expert at the Swedish Energy Agency.

Japan as a strategic partner in batteries

Japan has identified storage batteries as one of fourteen strategic technology areas in its national plan to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. An early pioneer in this field, Japan is investing in research, standardisation and international cooperation to meet future energy needs. This makes Japan a relevant and attractive partner for Sweden in the battery sector.

In December 2024, Sweden and Japan signed a Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) on energy and innovation. The agreement paves the way for increased cooperation between the countries, particularly in battery technology, where both have strong research environments and industrial players.

The Swedish Energy Agency's role in the battery ecosystem

The Swedish Energy Agency is the largest funder of energy research and innovation in the Nordic region. The agency supports projects throughout the development chain, from basic research to commercial application, and works strategically to strengthen Sweden's competitiveness in battery technology.

Through investments in test beds, demonstration environments and triple helix collaboration between academia, industry and the public sector, the Swedish Energy Agency is helping to build a sustainable and resilient European battery value chain. International collaborations, such as the one with Japan, are an important part of this work.

Expo 2025 Osaka – A global meeting place for innovation and collaboration

Sweden will participate in the world exhibition in Osaka, Japan, in 2025 through a joint Nordic pavilion. The initiative offers opportunities to promote Swedish exports and investments in Sweden and the Nordic region.

The exhibition is taking place from 13 April to 13 October 2025 with the theme Designing Future Society for Our Lives.
