National survey of interest in IPCEI projects on nuclear power
The Swedish Energy Agency is surveying the interest of Swedish companies in future projects within the EU collaboration IPCEI Nuclear Power. The deadline for responses is 10 December 2025.
The Government has tasked the Swedish Energy Agency with participating in preparatory work for a potential Swedish involvement in an Important Project of Common European Interest (IPCEI) focused on nuclear power. Swedish companies expressing interest in future IPCEI nuclear power projects may help influence which areas Sweden should prioritise. At present, no decision has been made to implement an IPCEI nuclear power project in Sweden. Submitted responses are non-binding.
About the IPCEI instrument
IPCEI is a special EU instrument that enables state aid for large-scale projects deemed to be of common European interest. To qualify as an IPCEI project, the initiative must be part of an integrated collaboration with other European projects. The Swedish Energy Agency will collect information from relevant stakeholders to make a preliminary assessment of which potential projects may meet the criteria for direct participation under the IPCEI communication (2021/C 528/02).
Structure of IPCEI nuclear power
Together with other Member States, Sweden has endorsed the establishment of an IPCEI for innovative nuclear technologies. Sweden is therefore expected to contribute to the analysis of what direction such an IPCEI should take. The aim is to support EU-wide goals and strategies, address market failures in the nuclear technology value chain, and identify relevant areas for Swedish project participation.
During preparatory discussions among Member States, the following areas have been identified as potential components of an IPCEI for nuclear power:
- Innovative nuclear power generation (small modular reactors and advanced modular reactors) and enabling activities
- Uranium processing and related fuel services, waste management, and decommissioning
- Development of supply chains and transformation of industrial facilities
- Advancement of fusion energy technologies
- Further development and diversification of manufacturing processes for medical radioisotopes, with a focus on research, development, and innovation
