The Sustainable Battery Value Chain of the Future
As a researcher in the battery field, you can now apply for funding for research and innovation projects contributing to a sustainable battery value chain in several relevant areas.
This is the second call in the Swedish Energy Agency's research program “Sustainable Battery Value Chain” (Hållbar batterivärdekedja). By funding projects that can contribute to the improvement of energy and resource efficiency and circularity in the Swedish part of the sustainable European battery chain, thereby contributing to strengthened and maintained competitiveness, sustainable transport electrification, and a resilient energy system.
What can be funded?
In this call we are specifically looking for projects in the following priority areas (in no particular order):
- New and existent battery chemistries.
- Production of components, cells, or raw materials for batteries.
- Production equipment and/or technology for manufacturing or recycling processes.
- Cell and battery system modeling or modeling tools for battery systems.
- International research collaboration with the opportunity to place the Swedish and European battery value chain in an international context, together with partners in Japan, South Korea, the Nordics, Germany, Spain, France, or Canada.
The call is also open to project applications in any of the other research areas of the program.
All else being equal, the projects that fall within the priority areas will be prioritised for funding ahead of other projects.
Who can apply?
All organisations who can contribute to the aims of the call can apply (see section 1 in the full call text). An organisation in this meaning could be:
- companies
- public sector organisations
- social sciences, humanities, technical and natural science faculties at universities and colleges
- research institutes
- other organisations connected to the battery value chain.
Equality and diversity considerations must be taken into account in the composition of the project group, in the choice of the project manager, in the development of the project’s content, goals and desired effects, and throughout the course of the project.
More information about the call and how to apply is available on the Swedish website

About Sustainable battery value chain
The program's vision is to "contribute to the Swedish parts of a sustainable European battery value chain" through research-related efforts in the battery area.
The program's long-term objective is to contribute to competitiveness, security of supply as well as ecological and social sustainability through battery-related research and academic competence building. A starting point for the program is that by funding projects that contribute to the deployment of resource and energy-efficient, system-efficient and circular processes along the battery value chain, it can contribute to strengthened and maintained competitiveness for Swedish actors, a sustainable electrification of transport and a resilient energy system.
