How the Union Registry works

All transactions within the EU ETS are performed in the EU's common registry, the Union Registry. Here you will find important dates during the calendar year for operators within the EU ETS.

  • 31 March is the last day for operators to report the previous year's emissions in the Union Registry, as well as to have it verified by an accredited verifier. Operators must also submit a verified emissions report for the previous year's emissions to the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency.
  • On 1 April, outgoing transactions are blocked on operator accounts where the annual emissions have not been verified. The European Commission publishes aggregated emissions data during the first week of April.
  • By 30 June, emission allowances for the current year are allocated by the Energy Agency to operators entitled to free allocation.
  • 30 September is the last day for operators to surrender emission allowances corresponding to the previous year's verified emissions.
  • By 30 November, the Swedish Energy Agency will send an email to all account representatives and account holders who are covered by this year's information review. The Swedish Energy Agency will assess and check whether the information provided in the account application is still complete, up-to-date, accurate and true. The review is carried out in accordance with the Registry Regulation.
  • By 31 December, all account holders must confirm to their national administrator that all information associated to their accounts is still complete, up-to-date, accurate and true. If the information is correct, this will be confirmed by you as a representative by not acting. If the information is incorrect, you must begin the work of correcting what is wrong, needs to be updated or is missing.
  • By 31 December, the annual fee must be paid in advance to the Swedish Energy Agency. The Swedish Energy Agency will invoice the trading accounts that are required to pay an annual fee.
