Strategic innovation programmes
Strategic innovation programmes is an initiative where leading actors from industry, academia and the public sector identify and define areas where they see a need for collaborative efforts and to mobilise Swedish resources and knowledge.
Under the initiative, Swedish companies, funding agencies, public sector, universities and university colleges are given the possibility to improve collaboration by joining forces. Stakeholders participating in the strategic innovation programmes are collectively responsible for formulating challenges to be addressed, establishing long-term goals and prioritising investment in research, development and innovation.
Through cross-border collaboration within areas that are strategically important for Sweden, conditions are created for providing sustainable solutions to global societal challenges and for increased international competitiveness. The Swedish Government has tasked Vinnova, the Swedish Energy Agency and Formas to carry out the initiative and support the innovation programmes, which shall be open to all stakeholders.
Two types of activities have been supported:
- Strategic innovation agendas, where a group of actors collectively defined visions, goals and strategies for the development of a specific area. Some of the more than 100 agendas that were granted funding provide the basis for strategic innovations programmes. Read more about the agendas on the Vinnova website.
- Strategic innovation programmes, supports the implementation of one or more strategic innovation agendas and provides call for proposals and other activities that contribute to the visions and goals of the agendas. Read more about the programmes on the Vinnova website.
Vinnova, the Swedish Energy Agency and the Swedish Research Council Formas jointly finance 17 Strategic innovation programmes. The strategic innovation programmes RE:Source and Viable Cities are administered and coordinated by the Swedish Energy Agency. Funding to establish and carry out Strategic innovation programmes has been announced through open calls on the funding organisations websites.
