Sweden and the Dominican Republic sign bilateral climate cooperation agreement
The Swedish Energy Agency and the Dominican Republic’s Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources have signed a bilateral agreement on climate cooperation under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. The agreement enables the Swedish Energy Agency to finance mitigation activities in the Caribbean country that both reduce emissions and contribute to sustainable development.
Sweden and the Dominican Republic’s collaboration on emissions trading under the Paris Agreement dates back to 2022, when the countries signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The new bilateral agreement is a prerequisite for the Swedish Energy Agency to finance mitigation activities in the Dominican Republic. The agreement also regulates how transactions of carbon credits between Sweden and the Dominican Republic will be conducted.
The agreement was signed by the Dominican Republic’s Minister of Environment and Natural Resources Armando Paíno Henríquez and the Swedish Energy Agency’s Acting Director General Caroline Asserup.
The Swedish Energy Agency’s partner organisation Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) is also involved in the Swedish-Dominican collaboration. Over the past year, GGGI has supported the Dominican Republic with capacity building funded by the Swedish Energy Agency.
“The Dominican Republic was one of the first countries the Swedish Energy Agency began cooperating with on emissions trading under the Paris Agreement. This new agreement marks an important milestone in our collaboration. The next step will be to develop climate projects that reduce emissions in the Dominican Republic,” says the Swedish Energy Agency’s Acting Director General Caroline Asserup.
The Dominican Republic’s Minister of Environment and Natural Resources Armando Paíno Henríquez, says:
“This agreement represents a milestone in the international cooperation between the Dominican Republic and Sweden — two nations united by a shared commitment to transparency, ambitious climate action, and sustainable development. Collaborations like this are essential to advancing our climate goals and delivering tangible benefits to our country and our communities".
The bilateral agreement with the Dominican Republic is Sweden’s fifth legally binding cooperation agreement on emissions trading under the Paris Agreement. Since before, Sweden has bilateral climate cooperation agreements in place with Ghana, Zambia, Nepal and Kenya, and Memoranda of Understanding with Rwanda and Switzerland.
