How can European finance ministries drive and shape the transition to a low-carbon society? This has been the focus of a major international study at Oxford Smith's School of Enterprise and the Environment, in collaboration with the Swedish Energy Agency.

An external evaluation shows that Sweden's programme for international climate cooperation under the Kyoto Protocol is expected to result in reduced greenhouse gas emissions corresponding to 34.5 million tonnes of carbon dioxide. The programme has also contributed to sustainable development and transfer of knowledge.

The Swedish Energy Agency recently co-authored an article that was published in the latest issue of the magazine Carbon Mechanisms Review. A summary of the article follows below.

Globally, cities account for more than 70 percent of the world's CO2 emissions. Therefore, the including of cities in the process of reducing global warming is essential. Sweden's method for organising this on a national level has inspired the EU's Cities Mission.

In connection with Stockholm +50 – an international meeting on the environment convened by the UN General Assembly – Sweden signed Memorandums of Understanding with Nepal and the Dominican Republic. The agreements lay the groundwork for climate cooperation between the countries under the terms of Article 6 of the Paris Agreement.
