Projektsammanfattning:
Beyond Biogas Sweden are developing a nitrogen (N) recovery system for wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) equipped with biogas digesters. The solution contributes to energy neutrality of WWTPs in a cost and resource efficient way. It recovers ammonia from anaerobically digested sewage sludge in the form of ammonium sulphate, increases biogas production, and lowers the N load to treat by using only lower-quality energy. From a system perspective, the solution delivers fossil-energy savings from the substitution of synthetic N fertilizers. Moreover, N recovery is not only associated with a lower energy demand than conventional biological N removal, but it delivers N biofertilizers with a lower energy intensity than the state-of-the-art alternatives for “green” ammonia. N recovery as biofertilizers reduces the exposure of the domestic agricultural sector to unstable geopolitics, decreases the carbon intensity of our food production, and contributes to an enhanced resource circularity.
